The fifth graders looked at real seashells to create theses drawings. Our goals were to use organic shapes, patterns, and analogous colors in our artwork. We used markers, color sticks, and chalk pastels to create our works of art.

The kindergarteners created clay ladybugs after hearing Eric Carle's book, "The Grouchy Ladybug". Their goals were to show texture in their artwork and to use the art supplies safely. After the ladybugs were painted, the kindergarteners made a leaf for the ladybug to rest on. The first graders created these flip flop collages using a variety of media. First we painted the background with liquid water colors. Our goal was to use the painting tachnique called wet on wet. We also sprinkled salt on our backgrounds for more texture. The next week we worked on making a matching pair of flip flops to add to our background. We used construction paper, pipe cleaners and beads for the flip flops to make them look 3-D.
The third graders created these tropical sunset silhouettes to show that they know how to blend colors and create organic shapes. The first week we created the background using bright colors. We tried to blend the sunset part to be more realistic. The second week we drew out our islands and palm trees with a pencil and then painted them in black.
We had a fabulous time at our Art Show this year. Lots of families came out to enjoy viewing the artwork from all of our Switzer students. Students could also paint a ceramic ornament, color, and have their faces painted by a high school art student. Our theme this year was "Seeing Nature through Art" and all of our artwork focused on different aspects of nature and showed our art learning goals as well. Some very special artists were chosen to represent Switzer at our annual District Art Show. It was nice to see families out and about enjoying the artwork at the weeklong show and I'm very proud of all of the creativity and artistic ability shown by the Switzer students who were chosen.
The fourth graders created these large flower compositions after learning about famous American artist Georgia O'Keefe. She created beautiful flower paintings that focused on one or two flowers stretching over the whole space of her canvas. Our goal was to create a large flower like Georgia O'Keefe using organic shapes, lines, and analogous colors to paint them in.
The fourth graders created these landscapes with a variety of lines and warm and cool colors. First we drew out our designs with a pencil. Then we traced over the pencil with black glue. When the glue was dry we painted in the spaces using warm and cool watercolor paint.
We wrapped up some of our fun reading month camp activities this week with tie dying in the art room. One student from each class who read their minutes for the week was chosen to come to the art room and tie dye a tshirt or a pillow case. It was a really fun hands on reward and I can't wait to see all of the tshirts and pillowcases after they have been washed.
