The kindergarteners created these beautiful butterflies after learning about the concept of symmetry where both sides of the design are the same. We worked really hard using shapes and lines to create symmetrical designs on our butterflies. After outlining our designs with black paint, we used bright colors to paint in the shapes and spaces symmetrically.

The fifth graders learned about famous artist Paul Klee and abstract art. Students used geometric shapes to create an abstract castle like Paul Klee. We then painted our castles using analogous colors which are colors that are neighbors on the color wheel. This gave our artwork a nice unified feeling. Check out our awesome abstract art!
The third graders concentrated on organic shapes and the cylinder form when creating these beautiful goldfish bowl paintings. Before painting we talked about artist Henri Matisse and how he was a fauve painter that liked to use bright colors. Students also used bright colors in their paintings, just like Matisse.
After learning about famous artist, Henri Matisse, the first graders created these cut paper snails. We drew a spiral line with our pencil first and then cut and glued paper down in a pattern to look like a snail. We learned that drawing with our scissors could be great fun! Here are our versions of "The Snail": Here is a photo of a person looking at the original artwork "The Snail" created by Henri Matisse. We had a great turnout this year for the annual art show, ice cream social, and basket raffle. Families were able to view a "Hall of Art" featuring projects that focused on famous artists throughout history. Students learned about artists like Georgia O'Keefe, Leonardo DaVinci, Keith Haring, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and many other amazing artists and then created a piece of artwork similar to the famous artist. Each class represented one artist. Also students were able to take their picture as the "Mona Lisa" and they could create a "mini masterpiece" at the art show. Students could take these home and display them on a popsicle stick easel.
The District Art Show was a great success! Thanks to all of the Switzer families that made it out that week to view the artwork. Students who were awarded special ribbons will have their artwork hanging in the UCS Board Office for a whole year, Congratulations!
After learning about famous artist Jim Dine, the fourth graders created these interesting heart designs focusing on pattern, repetition, color, and texture. Three of the hearts are made with oil pastels and tempera paint. The fourth heart was created out of metal tooling to give our art in interesting focal point that showed actual texture.
Students in second, fourth, and fifth grades helped me decorate the front hall for March is Reading Month. Our theme this year was "Ride the Reading Wave" and we created some great surf and sun themed artwork to go along with our theme. The second graders created these Tropical Sunset Silhouettes by first painting a bright, colorful sunset on the water. The next week we added our silhouette of a palm tree and glued our picture to a black frame to give it a finished look. The fourth and fifth graders created these surfboard paintings for the front hall. First we mixed paint to create the different tints we needed for the beach and sky. After painting the beach and sky, we used oil pastels to make interesting surfboard designs.
