Students in fifth grade learned about famous artist Gustav Klimt and his "Tree of Life" painting before creating these cool pipe cleaner and clay sculptures. There were two different main parts to this project, the base and the tree. The base was created out of clay using texture mats and lots of tools to show patterns on the clay. After the clay had been bisque fired, students were able to paint the clay and add a metallic finish with gold or silver reminiscent of the gold that Klimt used in his paintings. The tree was created out of six pipe cleaners. Students had to form the pipe cleaners into spiral type lines and twist the ends into a tree trunk shape. The tree was then glued to the base to finish off the sculpture.

Students created these amazing paper sculptures using bright construction paper on a black background. They cut and folded paper in a variety of ways to make their sculpture stand out in a 3-Dimensional manner and look interesting. Didn't they turn out great?!
This year Switzer Elementary celebrated its 50th year of being a great school. To commemorate this, we had a big celebration in the beginning of May. Staff, former students, current students and their families came out to browse through the school and participate in different events. In the art room I set up several canvases that had stencils ironed onto them which people could paint on. Once the paint was dry I could peel the stencils off to reveal cool designs on the canvases. Now I am in the process of touching up the areas on the canvas where the stencils bled a little. These paintings will hang in the art room and in the hall at Switzer to commemorate its 50th year of being open. Thanks to all of the special helpers that came in the art room to paint!! Here are the paintings after peeling the stencils off. The set of three small canvases are for the art room and say "PEACE, LOVE, ART" with corresponding symbols on them. The larger painting is of an Eagle and says, "Switzer Eagles, 1963-2013". Stay tuned to see the finished paintings in the next couple of months.....
The fifth graders learned about famous artist Paul Klee and abstract art. Students used geometric shapes to create an abstract castle like Paul Klee. We then painted our castles using analogous colors which are colors that are neighbors on the color wheel. This gave our artwork a nice unified feeling. Check out our awesome abstract art!
We had a great turnout this year for the annual art show, ice cream social, and basket raffle. Families were able to view a "Hall of Art" featuring projects that focused on famous artists throughout history. Students learned about artists like Georgia O'Keefe, Leonardo DaVinci, Keith Haring, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and many other amazing artists and then created a piece of artwork similar to the famous artist. Each class represented one artist. Also students were able to take their picture as the "Mona Lisa" and they could create a "mini masterpiece" at the art show. Students could take these home and display them on a popsicle stick easel.
The District Art Show was a great success! Thanks to all of the Switzer families that made it out that week to view the artwork. Students who were awarded special ribbons will have their artwork hanging in the UCS Board Office for a whole year, Congratulations!
Students in second, fourth, and fifth grades helped me decorate the front hall for March is Reading Month. Our theme this year was "Ride the Reading Wave" and we created some great surf and sun themed artwork to go along with our theme. The second graders created these Tropical Sunset Silhouettes by first painting a bright, colorful sunset on the water. The next week we added our silhouette of a palm tree and glued our picture to a black frame to give it a finished look. The fourth and fifth graders created these surfboard paintings for the front hall. First we mixed paint to create the different tints we needed for the beach and sky. After painting the beach and sky, we used oil pastels to make interesting surfboard designs.

In the month of December students at Switzer participated in a great fundraiser to help out a family. Students were able to donate a dollar to get a ticket. If their ticket was pulled at our assembly they got to throw a pie in the face of their favorite teacher. Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth grade students were great at helping me paint our special boards of an elf and Santa for "Pie Fest 2013".
