Several sixth graders had artwork on display in the halls for a few years because their artwork showed great creativity and craftsmanship. As a sixth grader they can now take their artwork with them as they leave Switzer Elementary. Thank you for helping us keep the halls of Switzer beautiful!

Sixth graders created these mixed media sculptures using both metal tooling and clay. They created an ocean animal out of metal tooling and sharpie markers and then they created a base for their animal out of clay to look like an ocean habitat. Students showed a lot of actual texture when making these sculptures. Fourth graders learned about creating actual texture and using form when they created these clay crocodiles. After the crocodiles were fired in the kiln, students were able to paint them using various shades of green tempera paint with some small parts of white, pink, or blue added on.
The kindergarteners were introduced to clay this year with this simple medallion project. Students rolled their clay into a ball, pressed it flat like a cookie, and added designs using buttons and popsicle sticks. After the clay was fired, we painted our medallions with bright colors and created a pattern with our beads on the necklace strings. We were very happy with the results! Students in fifth grade learned about famous artist Gustav Klimt and his "Tree of Life" painting before creating these cool pipe cleaner and clay sculptures. There were two different main parts to this project, the base and the tree. The base was created out of clay using texture mats and lots of tools to show patterns on the clay. After the clay had been bisque fired, students were able to paint the clay and add a metallic finish with gold or silver reminiscent of the gold that Klimt used in his paintings. The tree was created out of six pipe cleaners. Students had to form the pipe cleaners into spiral type lines and twist the ends into a tree trunk shape. The tree was then glued to the base to finish off the sculpture.
The first graders learned about creating actual texture when they made these clay fish. The first week, they rolled out their clay, cut a fish, and added details with a variety of clay tools to show texture in their artwork. The second week was spent painting the fish with bright colors and adding beads to the hanging wire.
Students in second and third grade learned about texture and 3-Dimensional art when creating these clay turtles. One week was spent sculpting the turtles out of clay and then using tools and buttons to add details and textures. After the turtles were bisque fired, students painted them with tempera paint.
The fourth graders created these fantastic flowers after learning about famous artist, Georgia O'Keefe. Students drew out a large flower composition on a 17"x17" piece of paper using organic shapes. After outlining the flower with a black oil pastel, we painted with analogous colors. Students learned how to blend paint with water to create more realistic colors on the flower.
Students created these amazing paper sculptures using bright construction paper on a black background. They cut and folded paper in a variety of ways to make their sculpture stand out in a 3-Dimensional manner and look interesting. Didn't they turn out great?!
This year Switzer Elementary celebrated its 50th year of being a great school. To commemorate this, we had a big celebration in the beginning of May. Staff, former students, current students and their families came out to browse through the school and participate in different events. In the art room I set up several canvases that had stencils ironed onto them which people could paint on. Once the paint was dry I could peel the stencils off to reveal cool designs on the canvases. Now I am in the process of touching up the areas on the canvas where the stencils bled a little. These paintings will hang in the art room and in the hall at Switzer to commemorate its 50th year of being open. Thanks to all of the special helpers that came in the art room to paint!! Here are the paintings after peeling the stencils off. The set of three small canvases are for the art room and say "PEACE, LOVE, ART" with corresponding symbols on them. The larger painting is of an Eagle and says, "Switzer Eagles, 1963-2013". Stay tuned to see the finished paintings in the next couple of months.....
