The fifth graders created these snowflakes by quilling paper, a technique that was used in colonial times to create art. We coiled the paper around a stick, glued it together and pinched it into different shapes. We glued these shapes down to create a snowflake that showed radial symmetry.

The fifth graders focused on lines, shapes, forms, and colors when they created their rural landscape drawings. They used a variety of farm photos as inspiration when they started drawing out their pictures. They first used a pencil to create shapes and forms. Then they outlined the shapes and forms with a black marker. The last step was to fill in each space with lines using colored markers. The students used a combination of horizontal, vertical, curved, and diagonal lines to fill in the spaces. It was interesting to see each students different take on the project and the way they created their lines. Great job 5th graders!
All of the fifth graders at Switzer Elementary were able to attend an amazing field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts last week. We mainly stayed in the Native American section of the museum to see first hand all of the wonderful creations that have been made by Native Americans in the past and present. It was so interesting to make a connection between the history that we learn about in our classrooms to the art we viewed in the museum. The first part of our trip was a guided tour led by a museum docent who filled us in on information about some of the artwork. They were very knowledgable and the students enjoyed listening to and interacting with the docents. The second half of the field trip was a self guided tour where students had to describe and analyze two Native American vessels of their choice. It was an awesome field trip and I hope the students get to visit the museum and explore more with their families outside of school. _After learning about famous American artist JOHN JAMES AUDUBON, the fifth graders tried their hand at drawing realistic birds. First they picked out a bird photograph of their choice. Then they had to measure and draw a grid on their photo and their paper to help them with the spacing and placement of their bird on their paper. After sketching out their bird with a pencil, they colored in their drawing using a combination of color sticks and chalk pastels. The first through sixth grade students have been creating sketchbooks to use throughout the school year in art class. In these sketchbooks, we will write and draw small things to help us remember what we are learning about such as art vocabulary words or information about various artists or types of art. At the end of the year, students will get to take home their sketchbooks and reflect on the year we had in art.

Mrs. W.About Me: This is my eighth year teaching art at Switzer Elementary. I see every K-6 student for art once a week. My goal during this time is to nurture students' creativity through exploring different art mediums and concepts. By exploring art, students will develop essential knowledge and skills that will prepare them for the future. Categories
