All of the fifth graders at Switzer Elementary were able to attend an amazing field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts last week. We mainly stayed in the Native American section of the museum to see first hand all of the wonderful creations that have been made by Native Americans in the past and present. It was so interesting to make a connection between the history that we learn about in our classrooms to the art we viewed in the museum. The first part of our trip was a guided tour led by a museum docent who filled us in on information about some of the artwork. They were very knowledgable and the students enjoyed listening to and interacting with the docents. The second half of the field trip was a self guided tour where students had to describe and analyze two Native American vessels of their choice. It was an awesome field trip and I hope the students get to visit the museum and explore more with their families outside of school.

The kindergarteners created these spooky cats using letters of the alphabet. We started with a U for the body, turned our paper, added an O for the head, an M for ears, and last a letter S for the tail. We painted our cats with black, added two glowing eyes, and a pattern around our frame for a nice presentation. The learning students do in their classrooms with their teacher was reinforced with this project.
The first graders created these Spiral Snail Paintings to show that they can create with lots of different types of lines. After discussing the many different types of lines and the directions they can go in, we drew out a snail using a spiral line. Then we added more lines to finish off the snail and the background such as zig zag, bumpy, or straight lines. Last we painted over our lines with black paint to make them really stand out. The second week we added the element of color to our painting to complete our lesson on lines. The Kindergateners created these beautiful fall trees to show that they know about WARM and COOL colors. We used only COOL colors for our background such as blue, green, and purple. Then we used the painting technique of Pointillism (using dots) to fill in our tree with WARM colors of red, orange, and yellow.
_After learning about famous American artist JOHN JAMES AUDUBON, the fifth graders tried their hand at drawing realistic birds. First they picked out a bird photograph of their choice. Then they had to measure and draw a grid on their photo and their paper to help them with the spacing and placement of their bird on their paper. After sketching out their bird with a pencil, they colored in their drawing using a combination of color sticks and chalk pastels. The fourth graders learned about Printmaking by creating these Spooky Houses. Our main elements of art that we focused on were LINES and SHAPES. We had to create a stamp by drawing a house using shapes and lines onto a piece of styrofoam. After we cut out our stamp we created a background of a moon using oil pastels on a piece of purple construction paper. Then we were ready to print. The fourth graders had fun rolling ink onto a brayer and inking up their own stamp. They printed a proof first on white paper to check their stamp out and then a final print onto their spooky moon papers. An example of our stamps out of styrofoam and our background papers.
The third graders created these paintings to show that they know about VALUE in art which is the lightness or darkness of colors. They also used the elements of SHAPES and LINES to create their silhouette of a cat against the moonlight. The first week we painting the background starting with the white moon and worked our way out to the darkest color we used which was red. The second week we drew out our branch and cat with lines and shapes and then painted them in with black to make them stand out against the background.
The second graders created these fox paintings with the goal in mind of using shapes and lines to draw out the fox and mixing tints and secondary colors to paint the fox and the background. We had fun dancing to "What does the Fox say?" after creating our awesome paintings.

Mrs. W.About Me: This is my eighth year teaching art at Switzer Elementary. I see every K-6 student for art once a week. My goal during this time is to nurture students' creativity through exploring different art mediums and concepts. By exploring art, students will develop essential knowledge and skills that will prepare them for the future. Categories
