A fun time was had by everyone at the annual Switzer Art Show, Basket Raffle, and Ice Cream Social. Students and their families could enjoy both 2-D & 3-D works of art created by every class at Switzer as well as participate in art activities for the night. There was even a chance for families to purchase a collaborative artwork made by each grade level during a silent art auction. Our theme for this year was "The Elements of Art" and students showed off their projects that centered around lines, shapes, color, space, form, and texture. Eisenhower High School art students were on hand for the evening to help everyone with fun art activities such as a collaborative weaving, a paint strip bookmark activity, a "selfie" drawing station, and a face painting station. There was also a silly art photo booth spot where students could grab a fun artsy prop and get their picture taken. Here are a few glimpses of the night:

Congratulations to all of the Switzer Students who have pieces of art in the annual UCS Fine Arts Festival! Here a few pictures of students who made it to the art show to share their art with their families. It was great to see all of those smiling faces! The show is still open every night the rest of this week from 5-8pm. The annual UCS Fine Arts Festival is starting tonight (April 20th) !! If you would like to view some amazing works of art come out to Ewell Elementary school and see artworks from Kindergarteners through 12th graders. Every school in UCS is represented. The community is welcome even if you don't have a student in the show. Below is more information and pictures of our Switzer Elementary Displays.
The third graders learned about artist Henri Matisse and then created these cool collages by cutting out organic and geometric shapes from painted papers. They could arrange and glue down the shapes on their paper any way they chose.
It's that time of year again for our awesome "Art to Remember" fundraiser where you can purchase special keepsakes featuring your child's artwork. All the proceeds go directly to Switzer Students' art education by allowing me to purchase special art supplies for the art room such as clay, glaze, specialty paints, markers, colored pencils and much, much more! Last years fundraiser was a great success and allowed me to get two awesome Bulletin Boards for displaying art work that are now at the front of the school. Order forms will be coming home soon. To see some of the special keepsakes that can be purchased or to learn more about "Art to Remember", you can visit their website HERE. Below you can see some of the amazing artwork that students have created for "Art to Remember." Singers representing all of our 4 high schools plus the IB program will be competing for the top scholarship prizes that evening. Please consider attending and cheering on these students. For those who have never been to the event, it is an evening to raise funds to provide scholarships for graduating UCS seniors. Each year, approximately 30 students are chosen district wide to receive these awards. The singing contestants will entertain the audience as they compete for scholarship prizes as well. The Mallow Jazz band will perform during the pre-dinner appetizers. Beautiful artwork created by UCS art teachers and students will be auctioned in both live and silent format throughout the evening. Our own Switzer Students from First and Second Grade helped me create two amazing artworks that will be up for auction on this night. (See pictures below) It is a great evening of raising funds to benefit the students of UCS academically, musically, and artistically. Please see the attached flyer and we look forward to seeing you there! OUr Artwork created for ARTS AND IDOLS:This artwork was created with the fingerprints of every student in the first grade at Switzer after talking about our LOVE of art and how we can express Love through making artwork. Here is a painting of colorful circles created by the second graders. Each student got to paint several circles carefully deciding which colors would show up best on other colors. When they were finished I added more details with lines and dots to enhance the circles.
Our two goals for this project were to show texture and to show color. We did that by creating an embossed metal heart as our point of interest surrounded by a color wheel created by cut up paint chips. Both parts show lots of texture in our artwork.
The third graders learned about different points of view when creating these snowmen. We placed the features on the face in different positions to show that our snowmen were looking to the sky instead of forward. We used construction paper, crayons, markers, and paint to create all of the details on and around our snowmen.
This year in the month of December, Switzer students had the opportunity to come back to school one night for lots of fun activities run by Switzer teachers and Eisenhower High School student helpers. In the Art room students could create a fun snowman ornament using a popsicle stick, paper, felt, markers and sequins. Students could also color a big mural in the bypass hallway and get their face painted by Eisenhower art students. There were even more crafts and activities going on all around the school. We all had a great time interacting with each other after school hours!
The third graders created owls two different ways in the month of November to learn about actual and implied texture and the difference between two-dimensional art and three-dimensional art. First we created a fun 3-D owl by painting an empty toilet paper roll and pushing down the top of it. Then we used markers and scraps to add details to the tube to create a cool 3-D owl. The next week we created a 2-D owl on paper using only one contour line which was a challenge. If we made a mistake we had to turn it into part of our drawing. Students colored in the owls using a variety of markers, colored pencils and crayons. For the backgrounds we used liquid watercolors to show a wet on wet painting technique.
The goal for this project was to use warm and cool colors to create a leaf design. Students also had to use a variety of LINES and PATTERNS to fill in the background, leaf, and border.
