The goal of this project was for the fifth graders to create a stamp and then print it four times on one sheet to show radial symmetry. They created amazing backgrounds to print on using oil pastels.

A fun time was had by everyone at the annual Switzer Art Show, Basket Raffle, and Ice Cream Social. Students and their families could enjoy both 2-D & 3-D works of art created by every class at Switzer as well as participate in art activities for the night. There was even a chance for families to purchase a collaborative artwork made by each grade level during a silent art auction. Our theme for this year was "The Elements of Art" and students showed off their projects that centered around lines, shapes, color, space, form, and texture. Eisenhower High School art students were on hand for the evening to help everyone with fun art activities such as a collaborative weaving, a paint strip bookmark activity, a "selfie" drawing station, and a face painting station. There was also a silly art photo booth spot where students could grab a fun artsy prop and get their picture taken. Here are a few glimpses of the night: Congratulations to all of the Switzer Students who have pieces of art in the annual UCS Fine Arts Festival! Here a few pictures of students who made it to the art show to share their art with their families. It was great to see all of those smiling faces! The show is still open every night the rest of this week from 5-8pm. The annual UCS Fine Arts Festival is starting tonight (April 20th) !! If you would like to view some amazing works of art come out to Ewell Elementary school and see artworks from Kindergarteners through 12th graders. Every school in UCS is represented. The community is welcome even if you don't have a student in the show. Below is more information and pictures of our Switzer Elementary Displays.
The fifth graders created these interesting ceramic houses with the intention of showing lots of textures, shapes, and forms. They started out with a hollow cube shape and added their own roof, doors, and windows. The fifth graders added texture to their clay houses by pressing texture mats onto the clay to show interesting designs. After the clay houses were bisque fired, the fifth graders painted them with bright colors and a glossy clear coat.
It's that time of year again for our awesome "Art to Remember" fundraiser where you can purchase special keepsakes featuring your child's artwork. All the proceeds go directly to Switzer Students' art education by allowing me to purchase special art supplies for the art room such as clay, glaze, specialty paints, markers, colored pencils and much, much more! Last years fundraiser was a great success and allowed me to get two awesome Bulletin Boards for displaying art work that are now at the front of the school. Order forms will be coming home soon. To see some of the special keepsakes that can be purchased or to learn more about "Art to Remember", you can visit their website HERE. Below you can see some of the amazing artwork that students have created for "Art to Remember." Singers representing all of our 4 high schools plus the IB program will be competing for the top scholarship prizes that evening. Please consider attending and cheering on these students. For those who have never been to the event, it is an evening to raise funds to provide scholarships for graduating UCS seniors. Each year, approximately 30 students are chosen district wide to receive these awards. The singing contestants will entertain the audience as they compete for scholarship prizes as well. The Mallow Jazz band will perform during the pre-dinner appetizers. Beautiful artwork created by UCS art teachers and students will be auctioned in both live and silent format throughout the evening. Our own Switzer Students from First and Second Grade helped me create two amazing artworks that will be up for auction on this night. (See pictures below) It is a great evening of raising funds to benefit the students of UCS academically, musically, and artistically. Please see the attached flyer and we look forward to seeing you there! OUr Artwork created for ARTS AND IDOLS:This artwork was created with the fingerprints of every student in the first grade at Switzer after talking about our LOVE of art and how we can express Love through making artwork. Here is a painting of colorful circles created by the second graders. Each student got to paint several circles carefully deciding which colors would show up best on other colors. When they were finished I added more details with lines and dots to enhance the circles.
This year in the month of December, Switzer students had the opportunity to come back to school one night for lots of fun activities run by Switzer teachers and Eisenhower High School student helpers. In the Art room students could create a fun snowman ornament using a popsicle stick, paper, felt, markers and sequins. Students could also color a big mural in the bypass hallway and get their face painted by Eisenhower art students. There were even more crafts and activities going on all around the school. We all had a great time interacting with each other after school hours!
The fifth graders created these round weavings to show actual texture and radial symmetry. The first part was to create the actual weaving on a piece of poster board that was cut into a circle. Students chose three or four colors of yarn to create their weaving. Then on the rest of the poster board they created a design with shapes and lines to show radial symmetry. The fifth graders had to match their markers to the yarn when coloring their designs to create a sense of unity in their artwork.
The fifth graders made these designs by using yarn on poster board to create raised lines. The second step was to cover the whole page with foil and then press the foil down. The goal for students was to make their lines stand out from the background and use a variety of lines to create interest in their artwork. To help the lines stand out more, students only colored the shapes in between the lines with sharpie markers. The lines stayed silver like the foil and stand out from the colorful background. The art room is an exciting place for students to come and learn. There are a variety materials for us to use in the art room to create many different types of artwork and sometimes it can get a little messy in here when we are being creative. If you are worried about your child getting stains on their clothes, please send an art shirt or smock to school for them to keep in their locker and wear on their art days. If you don't know when your child has art class, you can look below:
This year we are learning about the Elements and Principles of Art. For our first project, students in first through sixth grade created a sketchbook to use throughout the year. We will use these sketchbooks to write and draw about all of the Elements and Principles of Art and then we will create bigger projects to culminate our lessons. Students with their sketchbooksBEE YOUR BEST!!!Students are expected to follow the classroom and school rules at all times when they are in art class. We are happy to have a Positive Behavior Program here at Switzer this year and students are doing great using the 3 B's in the art room- Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Your Best/Safe. I love handing out tickets to students who are showing me the 3 B's in the art room! Keep checking back at this website to view some of our cool projects and happenings of the art room.
